Juniors Ciera Long and Chyna Lopez...have spent the past six weeks creating a variety of artwork in their advanced honors art class at Southside. They chose a vast array of mediums, from charcoal on cardboard, to watercolor and ink, to acrylic on canvas. Both primarily focus on portraits but have also been experimenting with animals and creating a Halloween inspired series. Ciera's zombie prom queen is sure to bring chills while Chyna's seemingly innocent clown could haunt your dreams. The show is currently hanging at Briar Patch Skate Shop in downtown Washington. It will be on display October 24-November 22. Briar Patch Skate Shop and it's owner, Sanders Harrison, has made the skate shop a home for many artists in the community. It's also a great place to buy skateboards and skateboard equipment at very competitive prices. The next time you are walking the streets of downtown, be sure to pop in and check out the amazing art from these two extremely talented students. After graduation in 2018, Chyna plans to attend East Carolina School of Art with a focus on illustration and painting. Ciera plans to obtain an apprenticeship with a credible tattoo studio to learn the craft and become a tattoo artist.

Every day, hundreds of travelers visit Asheville, for the sights, scenery and the unique eclectic vibe. Many passing through have no idea of something more sinister lurking not far from the city, but most of the locals so. Located at Beaucatcher Mountain in Asheville, Helen's Bridge is rooted in a legend and some unexplained occurrences. Some involving paranormal, others involving strange sights witnessed near the bridge, and some encounters have even left physical injuries. While most 'haunted' bridges cause trouble when you're only present on the bridge, it seems these spirits have another plan in mind. Even a week after visiting, your car might suddenly break down, or you might even spot a moving figure from the corner of your eye. Due to extreme paranormal nature, investigators and journalists have visited this bridge on a dark night to see if they can catch a sight of Helen. It isn't only Helen but strange and dark apparitions cited around the area. The high volume of paranormal activity around this bridge fuels much of the legend. People have described seeing monster-like figures lurking behind the dense brush.. Even slaps, punches, and scratches have been reported. North Carolina, and especially Asheville, are home to many ghost stories. Ranging from ghost sightings to spirits you are likely to experience anything and everything. Helen's Bridge seems like the one place where paranormal activity is at such a high rate, your'e likely to spot Helen, or even something worse. Simone Henry
Sophomore On November 13th, 1974 Ronald Defeo ran into a bar screaming his parents have been shot. Police returned to find Mr. and Mrs. Defeo and four out of the five Defeo children laying face down in their beds. They forensics showed that there was no signs of struggle and the bodies were not moved. Toxicology also showed no signs of being drugged. Ronald had claimed he wasn't home at the time of the murders, but when police found a gun box in his room he subsequentially confessed.
On December 18th, 1975 the Lutz family moved into the old Defeo home. Only thirteen months after the Defeo murders George and Kathleen Lutz thought the dutch colonial was a complete steal, but unaware of the horrors that would come with it. When the Lutz's had first moved in a priest came to bless the house. One of the rooms blessed was the room that belonged to Mr. and Mrs. Defeo. As the priest was blessing the room an unseen voice told him to "Get Out", which he gladly did. As he was leaving he told Mr. and Mrs. Lutz to not let anyone sleep in that room and he left. The Lutz's took his advice and made it into a sewing room. On the very first night they stayed in there they had claimed they felt "strange", but that was only the beginning of the strange occurrences. Soon they began feeling constant chills, declines in health, and a foul odor that consumed the entire house. Their daughter began staying in her room playing with her imaginary "friend" named Jodie who she described as a red-eyed pig who can transform in both size and shape. As the odor became stranger more things started to happen. Black stains started to appear in random places, an unseen force started to touch residents, and flies started appearing in the sewing room. George even says one night he awoke to see his wife turn into an old hag and levitate off the bed. The Lutz's had tried to call a priest, but everytime they tried the landline would mysteriously go out. Finally they took matters into their own hands. They grabbed crosses and went around the house saying the Lord's Prayer. This caused a response from a chorus of voices asking them to "Please stop." The final night of chaos was the worst. Reports of banging, moving furniture, and the children being terrorized was the last straw for the Lutz's. After twenty-eight days in the house the Lutz's packed up their stuff and left. Soon after they left, paranormal investigators Ed, and Lorraine Warren were called in to investigate. What the found was very startling. It turned that the land the house was built on had a lot of negative energy which was a playground for demonic spirits. The Lutz's never returned to the house. They sold all of their belongings and relocated to California. The house was sold again for $950,000 in 2010 and now the house is on the market again. Miranda Crawford Sophmore On Wednesday , October 19th high school students around the country took the PSAT. The PSAT is a test administered by CollegeBoard every year to determine eligibility for National Merit Scholarship program. The test is about 3 hours long with limited time in all sections. The students are tested in grammar, reading and math. Sophomore Kiara Cannon described it as "Stressful at times." 2 other Sophomores Shay'La Moore and Simone Henry agreed that the test was "Alright" and "Timing was shorter than I expected for the amount of questions." Later that day many students took to social media posting memes about the test. CollegeBoard did not post anything regarding the meming of the test. However, they did say scores will be available online starting October 27th. Below are some of the memes posted over the course of the week. Teacher: Take your test seriously, colleges will be looking at these scores! |
