Artist Statement By Emily JacksonStop Telling Women To Smile
This painting of Simone Henry was inspired by the artist Tatyana Fazlalizadeh. Tatyana’s work addresses the problem of harassment toward women and she combats this problem with bold street art. Her movement is called “Stop Telling Women To Smile.” She creates large murals of women of various nationalities and races to make a bold presence for women where they’re so often made to feel uncomfortable and unsafe - city streets. “The work attempts to address gender based street harassment by placing drawn portraits of women, composed with captions that speak directly to offenders, outside in public spaces. “ - Tatyana Fazlalizadeh I mimicked her art style by using just black and white to create a strong contrast like Tatyana does and really only focused on my model, Simone Henry’s face. I wanted Simone’s unsmiling face to appear strong and bold. I chose this particular artist because she incorporates all minorities in her work, which is shown on streets world wide. Whether you’re a woman, black, trans, gay etc. you should be treated with respect and kindness. <3
